Driving Home
Driving Home (Lithograph) was selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2020
This postcard sized print is based on the drive I make along the M1 between London and Yorkshire. I like the blurry passing moment - an instant of time that can nevertheless catch a fleeting emotion or feeling. A snapshot of possibility.
It is a variable edition of 100 prints. As it has been hand-inked and printed there are slight variations between the prints.
The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is now closed, but there are a few prints still available here
Lithography is a printing process which relies on the antipathy of grease and water. I use a drawing made with crayons, biros or sharpies, or a photographic image on polyester litho plates. The plate is then dampened with water and rolled with oil-based ink. The oily ink adheres to the greasy image areas and is repelled by the water in the non-image areas of the plate. It is then run through a press and printed onto paper. Each colour requires a separate plate and a separate print run.
For Driving Home 3 different plates were used, which were each registered by hand and eye, meaning the print went through the press 3 or 4 times before the final image was complete. As it has been hand-inked and printed there are slight variations between the prints. It has been printed onto 250gsm Somerset paper and is a variable edition of 100 prints.
